Guo Wenqing Meets with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan

On the morning of October 8, Guo Wenqing, China Minmetals' President and MCC Chairman met with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan who was visiting China at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. The two sides had extensive and in-depth exchanges on strengthening cooperation in the fields of metal mining, steel metallurgy and infrastructure construction in Pakistan.

Guo Wenqing said that it was a pleasure to meet with Prime Minister Imran Khan in Beijing and expressed his gratitude to the Pakistani government for supporting MCC Group in carrying out projects in the country over the years. At the same time, he briefed Prime Minister Imran Khan on the situations of the two Fortune Global 500 companies since their strategic restructuring. Guo Wenqing pointed out that China Minmetals has grown together with the People’s Republic of China since the company’s inception, and it has become an industrial group with metal mining as its core business from a company that only engaged in foreign trade; MCC Group, originally affiliated with the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, has undertaken more than 90% and 60% of all metallurgical construction projects in China and the world respectively. In this sense, the company is a veritable national team in metallurgical construction. China Minmetals has been committed to becoming “the Chinese No.1 and a world-class” metal mining group. After the strategic merger between the two central SOEs, China Minmetals has built its presence in the entire industrial chain of metal mining with its business covering resource acquisition, exploration, design, construction, operation, transportation, further processing, etc., and the company ranks No.1 among all mining and metal companies in the Fortune Global 500.

Guo Wenqing stressed that MCC Group has invested in 17 large mining projects in many countries around the world, including the Saindak Copper-Gold Mine and Duddar Lead-Zinc Mine projects in Pakistan. At the same time, the company has been actively fulfilling its social responsibility, and has made contributions recognized by both countries to the creation of employment, development of local economy and improvement of people’s livelihood in Pakistan. Guo Wenqing also introduced the MCC Group’s participation in the upgrading and expansion projects of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM).He said that MCC Group has maintained a long-term friendly relationship with Pakistan. The company has the ability and also the willingness to carry out more investment projects in the fields of mining, engineering and infrastructure construction in Pakistan, so as to contribute to the development of countries along the Belt and Road and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as well as the industrial, social and economic development and the improvement of people’s livelihood in Pakistan.

Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed gratitude to MCC Group for its contribution to Pakistan’s economy, people’s livelihood, and fields including science, technology, education, culture and health over the years. He also responded positively to specific issues, including the continuation of the Saindak project and the development of surrounding mineral resources, the development of large mining projects, and PSM’s upgrading and expansion projects. He said that after returning to Pakistan, he will deploy relevant ministries and agencies to promote relevant matters, and will personally pay attention to the progress of the above projects. Prime Minister Imran Khan stressed that Pakistan welcomes more competent and environmentally-conscious Chinese companies like MCC Group to invest in Pakistan and leave more value created through industrial and resource development in the country, thus making more contribution to the economic growth in both countries.

On the Pakistani side, Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi,Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Makhdum Khusro Bakhtya, Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms, Sheikh Rashid Ahmad, Minister for Railways, Zubair Gillani, Chairman of the Board of Investment (BOI), Naghmana A. Hashmi, Ambassador to China, and advisers to Prime Minister Imran Khan and his special assistants were present at the meeting. Zhang Zhaoxiang, Vice President of China Minmetals and General Manager of MCC Group, Zhang Ye, Vice President of MCC Group and the company’s staff members Wang Jicheng and Wang Zhou attended the meeting.
