China Minmetals Corporation 2014-10-15
From October 10 to 11, at the invitation of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA) (Asien-Pazifik-Ausschuss der Deutschen Wirtschaft), Chairman Zhou Zhongshu headed a delegation to Germany. During his stay in Germany, Chairman Zhou attended the Sixth “Hamburg Summit: China Meets Europe”, delivered a keynote speech on the development of green economy, and attended the closing luncheon, which was also attended by Li Keqiang, Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. During this time, Chairman Zhou also met with Hubert Lienhard, Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA) and German President of Advisory Board of German-Chinese Business Association (DCW).
On the morning of October 11, Chairman Zhou attended the Sixth “Hamburg Summit: China Meets Europe” in the hall of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and was invited to attend the special meeting of “Road towards Green Development of Chinese Economy” as a guest speaker. In his keynote speech, Chairman Zhou said that at a time when both China and Europe are developing the green economy, China urgently needs to introduce, develop and apply technologies for green economy, for it is now in the initial stage. By comparison, Europe has mature experience and industries. Therefore, China and Europe enjoy a broad space for cooperation in the field of green economy. Chairman Zhou proposed three suggestions for specific fields of cooperation: first, the two sides can work together to improve recycling technology, so as to deliver the recycling value of materials. Every year, a great number of metal materials including electronic waste and scrap cars are discarded throughout the world. In 2013, 160 million tons of scrap metals were recycled in 2013. If the two sides work together to research and promote the recycling of these materials, they can significantly reduce the consumption of primary resources. Second, the two sides can work together to research and develop energy storage technology for the development and utilization of new energy. Since the 1990s, Germany has vigorously developed new energy, and has recently developed the roadmap of the lithium battery industry and technological development. Meanwhile, China is making positive efforts to develop the new energy industry. China and Germany can work together to research and development relevant technologies to jointly promote their commercial applications in vehicle electrification and the energy storage market. Third, integrated energy-saving technologies can be developed to fully cut energy consumption. Taking Sandvik and Qingdao Sino-German Ecopark as an example, Chairman Zhou called for sincere cooperation between China and Europe, so as to fully reduce energy consumption through more European standards and technology. Chairman Zhou fondly said that he has been deeply impressed by the industrial civilization and ecological civilization of Germany every time he comes to Germany. As the world’s manufacturing center, China has the strongest desire to develop the green economy. It is hoped that China and Europe will actively build the cooperation framework to constantly deepen exchanges and development in these areas. China Minmetals would like to join the efforts to make innovation in R&D cooperation, enhance resource utilization and environmental protection technology, and make unremitting efforts to building a new economic model of sustainable development! His speech was unanimously agreed and warmly applauded by the guests.
After the summit, Chairman Zhou also attended the closing luncheon, which was also attended by some Chinese and foreign politicians including Premier Li Keqiang. At the luncheon, Fritz Horst Melsheimer, President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, Olaf Scholz, Mayor of Hamburg, Hubert Lienhard, Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA), and Nikolaus W. Schües, Chairman of the Hamburg Summit, delivered a speech respectively. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, European Parliament President Martin Schulz and Premier Li Keqiang successively delivered a speech. More than 600 people from the Chinese and European business community were present at the luncheon.
In his keynote speech entitled “Set a New Example of Mutual Benefit and Win-Win Cooperation”, Premier Li Keqiang particularly pointed out that the Chinese economy has been growing in a sustained and rapid manner for over 30 years, and it still has ample source of energy for future development. Chinese economy will maintain a medium to high growth rate and move to the medium-and-higher end of growth. The Chinese economy will not head for a “hard-landing” as some have worried about. On the contrary, it will bear positively on the global economy, and serve as a significant force propelling world economic recovery. That is conducive to China-Europe business cooperation and ensures mutual benefit and win-win outcomes in the cooperation. China is willing to sincerely work together with Europe to jointly promote new economic and trade and cultural development and lay a deeper and stronger foundation for China-EU relations.
On the afternoon of October 11, Chairman Zhou met in the Hamburg City Hall with Hubert Lienhard, Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA) and German President of Advisory Board of German-Chinese Business Association (DCW). Chairman Lienhard expressed his warm welcome and best wishes to Chairman Zhou and his delegation. He detailed the progress in the relevant work of Germany side since the first official meeting of the Advisory Board in this July, and envisaged the ways to ensure better channels of communication, closer relations, better services to member companies, and enhanced economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. Chairman Zhou extended his gratitude to Chairman Lienhard for his invitation, and briefed him on a series of work made by the Chinese side recently as Vice-Chairman of the Advisory Board. Chairman Zhou said that he will bring what Chairman Lienhard has envisaged back to China and report it to the relevant units for careful study. He hoped that the two sides can work together to promote the progress of the Advisory Board and give full play to the important role of the Advisory Board as the new mechanism of bilateral economic relations and the “second track”.
During his stay in Germany, Chairman Zhou was also briefed on the work of Minmetals Germany GmbH, and proposed his instructions and requirements for the next work.
