Weng Zuliang Meets with Dina Boluarte, President of the Republic of Peru

On June 29, 2024, Weng Zuliang, Chairman of China Minmetals, met with Dina Boluarte, President of the Republic of Peru, who was on a state visit to China. The two sides engaged in in-depth discussions to further deepen their cooperation.

Weng Zuliang expressed his gratitude to President Dina Boluarte and the Peruvian government for their strong support of China Minmetals' local enterprise. He provided an overview of China Minmetals, stating that China Minmetals is committed to building a world-class powerhouse with global competitiveness in the metals and minerals industry. He then emphasized the importance of cooperation and communication with the Peruvian government, noting that Peru has become the country with the largest overseas investment from China Minmetals. China Minmetals has invested in and operated the Las Bambas Copper Mine in southern Peru, and consistently adhered to the principles of green and sustainable development during its operation. The mine has cumulatively produced over 2.4 million tons of copper in copper concentrate, significantly contributing to Peru's economic growth, improving the livelihoods of local communities, and promoting China-Latin America trade relations. Weng Zuliang hoped that the Peruvian government would continue to optimize the investment environment address the concerns of the local enterprise. He also hoped that the government would expedite project approvals and boost investor confidence. Building on this foundation, China Minmetals will further deepen investment cooperation to achieve mutual benefit, and jointly promote Peru's economic growth and the well-being of its people.

President Dina Boluarte thanked China Minmetals for its contributions to Peru's economic and social development. She said that the Peruvian government highly valued and actively supported China Minmetals' investment projects in Peru. In 2022, the Peruvian government collaborated closely with Las Bambas, a local enterprise of China Minmetals, successfully restoring mining operations. This highlighted the excellent cooperation between the government and the enterprise. Given Peru's widespread and abundant metal and mineral resources, President Boluarte expressed her hope for further communication and cooperation in more fields and at a deeper level between the two sides. She noted that the Peruvian government would provide legal protection for the investment and operations of China Minmetals' local enterprise, so as to fully promote stable and mutually beneficial development for both sides.

The meeting was attended by Javier González-Olaechea Franco, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, José Arista Arbildo, Minister of Economy and Finance, Marco Vinicio Balarezo Lizarzaburu, Peruvian Ambassador to China, Song Yang, Chinese Ambassador to Peru, and Zhu Kebing, Senior Vice President of China Minmetals. Other participants included the heads of relevant headquarter departments and directly-managed enterprises of China Minmetals.
