National Low Carbon Day | Pursuing Innovation in Energy Conservation and Low Carbon, China Minmetals Takes Purposeful Actions to Showcase Responsibilities

China Minmetals Corporation 2025-07-01

June 25 marks National Low-Carbon Day, themed "Pioneering the Path to Low Carbon, Energizing a Green Future". For many years, the Party Group of China Minmetals has diligently implemented the strategic deployment of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council regarding carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. By focusing on the primary responsibilities and key business of China Minmetals, the Party Group has continuously driven the development of green and low-carbon production and lifestyle practices. This has not only helped China Minmetals achieve green and sustainable development but also made new contributions to the mission of "serving and reinvigorating the country through the metals and minerals industry". These efforts have greatly supported the construction of a beautiful China.

Strengthening top-level design and formulating the Carbon Peaking Action Plan

China Minmetals has developed the Carbon Peaking Action Plan which defines two key strategic tasks: to position itself as a leader in green and low-carbon development within its own operations and to serve as an empowerer of green and low-carbon development for the entire industry. The action plan also establishes the specific pathways, timeline, and roadmap for China Minmetals to reach carbon peaking.

In line with the action plan, China Minmetals develops a rolling annual action plan for carbon peaking every year and fully promotes the implementation of the plan. In 2024, the comprehensive energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of output value (a comparable price) of China Minmetals dropped by 20.7% compared to 2020, and the carbon dioxide emissions per 10,000 yuan of output value (revenue) (a comparable price) decreased by 19.1% compared to 2020. In November 2024, China Minmetals was awarded the title of China's Top Runner for Industrial Carbon Peaking by the China Federation of Industrial Economics.

Implementing energy conservation and carbon reduction actions to continuously improve energy utilization efficiency

In line with the "dual control" requirements for carbon emissions, China Minmetals has enhanced and standardized the statistical monitoring of energy conservation and carbon reduction. It has improved early warning and forecasting capabilities and used production and operation scheduling meetings to issue early warning reminders regarding the progress of energy conservation and carbon reduction tasks for its directly-managed enterprises. It has also vigorously pushed for the updating of processes and equipment in its key enterprises and implemented the requirements of energy conservation and carbon reduction actions. Since 2023, a total of 178 outdated production processes, technologies, and facilities have been phased out, equivalent to 9,514 tons of standard coal. Hunan Zhuye Nonferrous Metals Co., Ltd. has initiated a full-process effort to reduce coke consumption, bringing the coke consumption in its volatilization kiln down to 410 kg per ton of zinc. This reduction is equivalent to cutting carbon emissions by 12,600 tons each year. China MCC5 Group CORP.LTD. has successfully developed a "zero-carbon building" demonstration project. In the project, it applies over twenty green and low-carbon technologies, such as Photovoltaic, Energy Storage, Direct Current, Flexibility (PEDF), smart operation and maintenance, and high-performance materials. Therefore, the project has been recognized as one of the top ten international best cases for sustainable innovation in human settlements in 2024.

Expanding the application of renewable energy to drive the rise of green consumption

Operating mines and smelting organizations under China Minmetals have been working hard to increase the proportion of renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaics, in their energy supply. More than ten enterprises under China Minmetals have developed photovoltaic power generation projects with a grid-connected installed capacity of over 100MW. These enterprises include North China Aluminum Co., Ltd., Hunan Zhuye Huoju New Materials Co., Ltd., and Zhuzhou Cemented Carbide Cutting Tools Co., Ltd. etc. Due to their actively participation in green power market transactions, MCC Ramu New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., Hunan Zhuye Nonferrous Metals Co., Ltd., and Minmetals New Energy Materials (Hunan) Co., Ltd., among others, have traded more than 500 GWh of green power throughout the year.

Strengthening the comprehensive recycling and utilization of resources to promote the development of circular economy

China Minmetals has enhanced its research and application of comprehensive processing technologies for low-grade ores, associated and co-existing minerals, and difficult-to-enrich and smelt ores. Through innovative mineral processing techniques and the introduction of advanced smelting technologies, the Group has been able to fully utilize these resources and turn waste into treasure. Hunan Shizhuyuan Nonferrous Metals Co., Ltd. has conducted experimental research on the comprehensive recovery of tungsten and tin, which has now entered the industrial production phase. MCC Baosteel Technology Services Co., Ltd. is committed to processing steel slag and turning it into a valuable resource, creating a demonstration park for the production, processing, and recycling of steel slag. Key energy-consuming companies under China Minmetals have continued to carry out the cascaded utilization of waste heat and pressure. In 2024, China Minmetals recorded a 22.1% year-on-year increase in the total amount of waste heat and energy recovered, with the recovery rate rising by 20.0% year-on-year.

Focusing on green and low-carbon technology innovation to empower the low-carbon development of the industry

China Minmetals has enhanced its systematic R&D layout by prioritizing renewable energy, green steelmaking and metallurgy, and industrial digitalization as key areas supported by its science and technology programs and technological innovation funds. As a result, a number of core technologies have been developed. The application of the 3R carbon-hydrogen blast furnace technology for efficient reduction developed by CISDI Group Co., Ltd. has been included in the Catalogue of Promoted Green Technologies (2024 Edition) by the National Development and Reform Commission. Moreover, 3 technologies, including the miniaturized supercritical safe and clean coal gas power generation technology, have been listed in the fifth batch of the Catalogue of Nationally Prioritized Low-Carbon Technologies. These technologies have provided significant support for reducing pollution and carbon emissions in China's iron and steel industry.

By upholding "Pioneering the Path to Low Carbon, Energizing a Green Future", China Minmetals will maintain its dual roles as a leader and empowerer in green and low-carbon development. It will continue to promote carbon reduction in industrial sectors like metals & minerals and metallurgical construction, contributing more significantly to the early realization of China's "30·60" goals.
